#3: Layout comparison

When studying at RMIT University, I have learned a lot of things about how to make a magazine. To have an outstanding magazine, there are several elements that contributed: color palette, the content of articles, photos, and especially the layout. The layout has a huge influence on how the content is conveyed as well as how it attracts the viewers' attention. In this blog, I will compare two layouts to show the variety of them in the design world.

The first layout is what I find accidentally on Pinterest. The vibe of this layout is elegant, minimal, and professional. The main colors of the layout are black and light beige, which brings me a fresh look. The black letters in the light beige background are easy to read. There are mainly two columns on each page, with one picture on the left or right-hand side. Therefore, both the image and the information are clear to see. The typeface of this layout is Serif, which brings a feeling of seriousness and proper. The content displayed on the pages will be directly conveyed to the viewers. This layout is suitable for a magazine about jewelry, fashion, or furniture.

The next layout I want to analyze is for a coffee shop:

This layout brings me a whole different experience from the first one. With the brown-grey and creamy white, it is the symbol of a pleasant space which you can kick-start your day or have a cup of coffee and chit chat with your friends. The creamy shape at the corner of the page makes me imagine the foam of latte. The pictures are put in a custom frame and the camera focused on the coffee cup to emphasize the products of the coffee shop. The typeface chosen for the title in this layout is handwriting but it is clear to see. There are also two columns on each page, one for photos and one for the information.

When creating or choosing a layout, it is really important that you know clearly what you want to convey to your viewers. To have a layout that is appropriate for your work, you may have to spend a lot of time seeking and learning from the design industry.
